ABOUT ME
My name is Lorraine Gagliano, and I hope that this year will be a fun and challenging year for everyone. I hold a B.A. in Classical Languages and Classical Studies from Vanderbilt University, an M.A. in Latin from the University of Michigan, and two additional M.A. degrees in Classical Archaeology from both the University of Michigan and Florida State University. I have taught Latin at the university, middle- and high school levels since 2001, including at the University of Michigan, the University of Memphis, Florida State University, and Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, TN. I am excited to sponsor Germantown High’s chapter of the Junior Classical League (JCL), as I loved Latin in high school and did very well at JCL competitions, earning several first place awards at the state and national levels. For several years I have tutored Latin while I stayed at home with my two young daughters, who are now nine and five years old. My husband, another teacher, teaches middle school Latin at Memphis University School (MUS).
In addition to my educational and teaching experience, I bring a number of unique experiences that complement my teaching Latin at GHS, including studying Latin intensively with Fr. Reginald Foster, former Latinist for Pope John Paul II, and studying Latin, Latin epigraphy, and classical archaeology at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. My strengths as a teacher, however, go beyond just the Latin language. I have also participated in numerous archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean, including at Pompeii and Ostia, all of which lend a distinct perspective on the ancient world and an ability to make the Latin language relatable to students through Roman culture. I'm excited to be teaching your child this school year, and please feel free to contact me at [email protected] .
